De Courcey Albions promotion hopes took a severe dent last sunday as they went down 3-1 at home to Afton Villa. The home team made it extremely tough for themselves after falling 2-0 behind within the opening 5 minutes. Villa looked like the only team in the game until on 25 mins Colm O’Donovan hit the post with a powerful header from a corner. Within a minute JP Hayes clattered the post with a shot and left the Albion faithful hopeful of a comeback. Albion upped the pace & on 35 mins halved the defecit with some nice work & cool finish from Ronan O’Driscoll. His 3rd goal in 2competitive games & 5th goal in the last 3 games. But their work rate was dashed just before the break when Villas powering midfielder found himself free from a corner to head home. 3-1 at half time.
The 2nd half was a different story as Albion pressed & pressed creating chance after chance. Jody MacNamara was left with little to do between the sticks. With 10 minutes to go Albion were down to 10 men after John Duggan saw red. Afton Villa saw out the game defending in numbers but were deserved winners at the end of the day. Villa now leapfrog Albion to 4th in the table.
